Pioneering school safety program uses detection dogs to mitigate shooting risks and empower students to feel safer
The Paws on Patrol School Safety Program is driven by the first public/private consortium to trial a new initiative aimed at reducing shooter incidents using dogs placed at the heart of the school community
Auburn, Alabama, US, Tuesday 23rd August 2022: Global K9 Protection Group (GK9PG), a leading provider of canine screening solutions, is a founding member of the first public and private consortium to develop a school safety scheme using dogs trained to detect weapons as well as to work with students and staff to make them feel safer.
The Paws on Patrol program for schools will help establish a blueprint for school safety standards, bringing together law enforcement, school officials, community stakeholders and detection dog experts with the goal of protecting students from shootings and building community confidence.
“The consortium brings together law enforcement, school officials, community stakeholders and detection dog experts with the goal of protecting students from shootings and building community confidence,” said Michael Larkin, Vice President Commercial Services, GK9PG.
“Our handlers and detection dogs perform three functions within the school environment.
“They mitigate danger by identifying a person carrying an unauthorized weapon coming onto campus, they intervene by instantly alerting School Resource Officers or law enforcement, and they improve the educational environment as they become part of the school community.
“Going to school should always be a positive experience and we believe that kids, parents, and staff will have an improved sense of safety and security where there is a world-class, highly trained, and certified firearm detection dog on the campus.”
A veteran-owned and operated business, GK9PG is the largest Transportation Security Administration (TSA)-certified third-party canine program provider and the second largest canine security company in the U.S.
Key to the performance of Paws on Patrol and the progress of the program is continuous detailed analysis of the data, GK9PG’s experience in detection dogs, and open communication between all stakeholders.
“We are convinced, with cooperation across all stakeholders in the public/private consortium, Paws on Patrol offers a practical and genuine step forward in school security,” said Larkin.
“Our vision is to create a national standard and develop best practices for the integration of these dogs into an educational environment that can be shared with schools and deployed across the country.”
Global K9 currently has two partnership programs underway in Alabama and California and early feedback from stakeholders has been positive and students have welcomed the dogs into their schools.
Global K9’s Kinetic Enhanced Firearms Capable detection dogs are able to locate a person-worn or concealed-carried unauthorized weapon coming onto campus and alert their handler who will work in partnership with school security, School Resource Officers, and law enforcement to stop the person carrying the weapon.
The dogs are also a visual deterrent and reduce risk by being visible and working with the student and staff population as they come to school and during the school day.
